GVHA’s events coordinator, Tereza Ticha is rallying boaters to get into the Christmas spirit. In 2016, she provided several dozen boxes of multi-coloured Christmas lights to boaters and float home owners for the annual Marina Light-up, which begins on November 24 and runs through all of December at Inner Harbour and Wharf Street Marinas, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Soon she’ll be heading back to Costco to stock up again. She says that some of the participants enjoy a bit of friendly competition, adding movable decorations, music and wreaths to their displays. “We had a few people who decorated their boats all the way up their masts, so the outline of the sails lit up,” she says. “That was absolutely beautiful.” Everyone is invited to join us on the Causeway docks in front of the Empress at 5:30 on November 24 for hot chocolate and first lights.
Then on December 2, the Ogden Point Light Up happens as participants of the Island Equipment Owners Association’s Lighted Truck Convoy are getting ready to depart from the terminal. The event opens at 3 pm and the trucks will leave from Ogden Point at 5:45pm. Santa will be arriving by tug boat and giving candy canes to the kids. At dusk, we will switch on the Christmas lights around terminal and the community can stay to enjoy hot drinks and shop the local vendors. There will also be beer and mulled wine, the Kraken food truck, and popcorn by donation, with proceeds going to the James Bay Community Project.
