Greater Victoria Harbour Authority board members and staff recently visited the Sir John Franklin—a Canadian Coast Guard research vessel being finished at Ogden Point. The ship was built in Vancouver by Seaspan Shipyards, before being transferred to Victoria. She is the first of a trio of Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV), which will be deployed on Canada’s east and west coasts. Aboard the ships, researchers will study the health of fish stocks and their ocean environments.
Since December of last year, work on the vessel has employed more than 100 tradespeople and apprentices at Ogden Point. Once the work has finished, she will enter testing and trials before beginning service with the Canadian Coast Guard.
