Securing Ogden Point

Recent visitors to Ogden Point may have wondered about the trench dug through the parking lot, joining Terminal A and B.

During cruise ship season at Ogden Point, there is heightened security in place in the terminals, under the jurisdiction of Canadian Border Services Agency. A key border entry point for BC, the cruise terminal welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year, most of them arriving from U.S. ports. The terminals are equipped to handle passport and background checks, and handle sensitive passenger data.

CBSA recently audited all their facilities and introduced new measures to increase security, including upgrading the terminal buildings from WIFI to data lines before next cruise season begins in April 2018. GVHA project manager Simon Renvoize has been working with CBSA to make the changes.

A trench has now been dug to feed the fibre optic cables underground between the buildings, and as the terminals are federally controlled facilities during cruise season, CBSA will be responsible for completing the final connections under secure conditions.
